New Spirit Tracks Interview from Eiji Aonuma

The Spirit Tracks related news may have slowed, but it hasn't stopped! Eiji Aonuma has done a new interview about his thoughts on the game. Here are a few tidbits:

"I thought the idea of working together with the Phantom Guardians in your adventure was pretty fun...But they're enemies, after all, so we had to think up some kind of motive for them to be your friends. At the same time, though, I liked how the Phantoms were a sort of 'unbeatable enemy' in the last game and I didn't want to change that. That's how we began to think about some way to use Princess Zelda."

"People on the staff have wanted to have Zelda in the game for ages, but if we did that, then her skirt becomes an issue...Having girls in dresses in an action game is kind of hard to deal with. That's how we got the idea of having her body stolen and her soul going inside Phantom Guardians."

Zelda Movie Hero of Time Released Online

Now that Spirit Tracks has launched, Zelda news has been a little slow, but fear not! The live action Zelda movie has finally been released online. You can watch the movie streaming here. The film is pretty impressive for a fan movie, and it's a great little Christmas present for any fan of the Zelda series. Enjoy!

The Legend of Zelda director Eiji Aonuma continues to do interviews. Since the last interview posted here, he's talked Zelda with Eurogamer and guardian.co.uk. Here are a few highlights:

"The Water Temple in the Ocarina of Time was notorious for being very tough to conquer," he says. "I am most sorry that it was not easy for you to put on and take off the heavy boots; that all the time you had to visit the inventory.
"I am," he continues, genuine regret evident in his tone, "very sorry about that. I should have made it much easier to switch to the heavy boots."

On handheld devices like DS, for the grand universe of Zelda to be correctly depicted, cel-shading or toon-shading style is the most appropriate. For example, for the touch operation we're using on DS, top-view angle is necessary. If we're going to apply photorealistic proportions between human characters and objects, the player character would have to be really small. But with more anime/Manga-style art, deformation is allowed and taken as a natural. By that I mean that building and some other objects around you can be very small compared with real life, but yet it's not strange in the anime style. That kind of deformation is readily available with cel-shading technology and thanks to that kind of graphical style we are now able to put Zelda in an adventure where people can identify the most important items without difficulty in understanding proper distance or proportion between character and object.

"I have an eight-year-old son myself at home, and quite recently he started playing The Phantom Hourglass for DS, because when the software first hit the market he was too young. When he started playing with the boat, I told him: 'In the next Zelda, you are going to be able to ride on the train.' He answered: 'OK, Dad, first boat, and then train? Surely next time, Link is going to fly in the sky ... '"

Spirit Tracks comes out in Europe on December 11, 2009. It comes out in North America on December 7, 2009.

Eiji Aonuma Talks Zelda in New Interview

In a new interview, Eiji Aonuma talks about Zelda Wii as well as the past Zelda games he's worked on. He discussed how Spirit Tracks has had an influence on Zelda Wii already.

"The Difference between the two platforms (Wii and DS) is big. The experience with Spirit Tracks, trying to enhance an already ‘near-perfect control’, is what pushed us on learning how to rack our brains. With Wii it is the same, we want to make the most of its controls. We want the player to control the game in the best possible way. On Wii, the camera is more realistic. Graphics are more realistic, too, and controls have to be, therefore, much more realistic".

Aonuma also discussed how the classic game Ocarina of Time has shaped Zelda games since.

"There were a lot of things we couldn’t do [back with OoT] due to technical limitations. But I think we’ve been solving those issues with every Zelda since then. With each entry, I’ve tried to add things I couldn’t do before. Actually, it’s like I’ve been remaking it during these years. So if you ask me if there’s going to be a Zelda remake… I thought I was making it all this time! So it maybe I haven't done well enough, I haven’t been up to the expected level.”

"It’s complicated. Past things belong to our memories, and they grow bigger in there. If you play Ocarina of Time nowadays, you notice that it’s not that good. Sometimes it doesn’t move as fast as it should, graphics aren’t as beautiful as they should be; there are some confusing parts… Any present Zelda is technically superior. Everything goes faster, more fluid… but to best Ocarina of Time, a great change –comparable to what happened back then- must be introduced. And that’ll be rather complicated".

He finished off the interview by answering a question about the infamous arguments between him and Shigeru Miyamoto.

“I didn’t know our discussions were so well known! I believe we have different visions because Mr. Miyamoto is just a genius; he’s got an innate talent, and everything I do, I had to learn step by step. And it took a lot for me, I have no natural talent. I’ve spent many years with Mr. Miyamoto and, since the beginning, the moment I have to bring my work and show it to him for his opinion is a very special moment, and I enjoy with it. (…) He notices things I’d never see. After this time, our visions are starting to match up more and more. However, I have a lot more left to try to reach his level”.

New Instrument For Link in Spirit Tracks

More exciting new information about Spirit Tracks has been trickling out. Official Nintendo Magazine revealed here that Link will have a new instrument to play in the game, with songs you can learn to unlock different things in the game. The instrument will be played using the stylus and the DS microphone. The official art of Link playing the instrument, called the Spirit Pipes, is pictured above. A few in-game screenshots of the instrument are pictured below:

More Miyamato Comments on Zelda Wii

Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has let a few more tidbits about Zelda Wii drop. In a recent interview, he said the following on motion plus:

“We’re implementing it so that players can feel like they themselves are holding the sword. In the previous Zelda (Twilight Princess Wii) the targeting was based on the IR pointer. This time however, we’ll be using MotionPlus for a variety of more convenient targeting systems that will allow for more pleasant gameplay.”

He also had more to say about Zelda Wii when asked about the upcoming DS title Spirit Tracks, saying that:

“[Spirit Tracks] will be really fun. It’s turning out to be rather challenging. Many of our Japanese customers were introduced to the Zelda series with Phantom Hourglass, and ST could prove to be kind of hard for them, but I thought we’d show them what Zelda is really made of this time around. So it’s turning into quite a unique title. I’ve managed to gather quite a few creative team members for Zelda ST, so I’d like Zelda Wii to also enjoy creative development as much as possible.”

Shigeru Miyamoto Interview Mentions New Wii Zelda

Shigeru Miyamoto was recently interviewed by MTV Multiplayer. The interview mostly is about the upcoming DS game Spirit Tracks, but he gave a little tidbit for those looking forward to the next Zelda on the Wii. Miyamoto siad that it will be "really fun to move your body around." when asked about a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Miyamoto on How the Wii's Super Guide Feature Could Effect Zelda

At a recent roundtable in New York City, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto spoke out on how he thought the Wii's new Super Guide feature could effect future Zelda games. The super guide feature allows players who are continually struggling through a game's level to let a computer play through the level for them so they can continue on in the game. This will allow developers to create more difficult games.

At the roundtable, Miyamoto mentioned that he was unsure of whether or not the Super Guide feature would be implemented for future Zelda games, and that doing so could "open Pandora's Box" because of Zelda's puzzle heavy gameplay.

Miyamoto also said that he would like to add more sword based gameplay in future Zelda games on the Wii.

Over at Zelda Informer there's a terrific editorial that questions whether the threat level in the Zelda series is high enough. Here's an excerpt to give you an idea:

There is one real factor that makes a villain truly threatening. That factor is time. In all too many Zelda games, from The Legend of Zelda to Ocarina of Time to The Wind Waker, from Twilight Princess to Phantom Hourglass, villains lack this threat of time. Link can run around trying to be a hero for as long as he likes, and there is no threat of the land becoming any worse than it is. He has forever to overthrow the villain, because the villain does nothing but sit in their castle waiting to be overthrown. The villain does nothing to cause a real living threat. There is no timeframe for the hero to accomplish his task before it is too late.

Nintendo Wii Cheats for Zelda Twilight Princess

Though Twilight Princess came out for the Wii and Gamecube a while ago, many gamers are still enjoying it today. Here are a few Nintendo Wii cheats for Zelda Twilight Princess.

Magnetic Ceiling Glitch

This can be done wherever there is a magnetic ceiling, such as the first one encountered in Death Mountain Mines.

First equip the boots to the D-pad but don’t put them on. Go under the magnetic field and equip the boots. In mid flight up to the ceiling press the - button and put an item where the iron boots were on the D-pad, and make sure the Iron boots are not anywhere on the D-Pad. Unpause the game and finish flying onto the ceiling. You should be on the ceiling with the Iron boots off and you will stay there and be able to walk faster.

To get down walk off the magnetic part of the ceiling or equip and unequip the Iron Boots.

Infinite Bomb Glitch

First, as a wolf, play Plumm's minigame with the fruit and crash. Then, turn back into a human and turn to the water behind you. While swimming in it, equip the hookshot, and while it is held out, strafe to the side and through the wall. If it works, you'll be swimming through the wall. Keep swimming until you fall and die. Now, as you wake up, Plumm will come back and ask to to play again. Say yes. Then crash at the beginning again. You should wake back up in the beyond-the-wall area from before, but you can stand. Turn into a wolf and jump into the waterfall. Then, you'll wake up in front of Iza's assistant. Say yes, and you'll go to her cabin. The boat will take off without you, and you'll be a wolf. So now, warp anywhere you want, and you'll have infinite bombs.

Donation Reduction

Donate 1000 rupees to Goron inside the Malo Mart in Kakariko Village (you must progress past the third dungeon beforehand). Talk to the old Goron outside the shop and complete the quest he offers. Once completed, the second donation amount will be reduced from 2000 to 200 rupees.

Easily discover Heart Pieces

To easily find the locations of all Heart Pieces, go to Fanadi's Palace in Hyrule Castle Town and pay her 10 Rupees for a Love fortune. You will then see an area in the game that will contain a Heart Piece around it, obtainable in some fashion. You can keep paying her to show you other locations, but she will sometimes repeat the same location a few times over.

Worms for fishing

If you go into the fishing hole behind the sign at the very entrance there will 3 little mounds of dirt.

Turn into the wolf and dig these up, earth worms will appear, scoop them up in an empty bottle and use them as bait for your fishing hook to make fishing extra easy!

Control a Cucco!

Unlike other Zelda games (where you got attacked if you hit the Cuccos), in Twilight Princess if you hit a Cucco about 8 times, you'll be able to control it for a short period of time.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks release date for Europe has been set. The DS game will hit shelves in Europe on December 11th. There is no word yet on whether or not the game will reach Australian shores on the same day, but it looks likely.

BLAST: What is your background with video games? First system? Favorite game?
H.S.I have always found video games to be a great way to relax and unwind after a busy day. The first system I ever owned was a Nintendo. The year Nintendo came out my siblings and I pooled our allowances to buy one. We played ALL the time. Later we got a Game Boy for Christmas. I played that all the time because my favorite game was Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

BLAST: Are you a big fan of the Zelda series?
H.S. Yes. The Legend of Zelda was one of the first video games I ever played, so I think I will always be a fan of the series. I love how the series involves a mixture of action and puzzle solving skills.

BLAST: Has the popularity of the Zelda themed Ocarina helped business?
H.S. Definitely! Thanks to the Ocarina of Time, many gamers have become interested in the instrument. They are always pleased to discover that it is a real instrument after all! Our Zelda ocarina is one of our best sellers. We just came out with a new Zelda ocarina that features the Triforce as well as new Rupee ocarinas!

BLAST: Have there been any large orders of Ocarina’s, or any strange orders from super Zelda fans?
H.S. We have partnered with anime, cosplay, and music shops all over the world to bring the ocarinas to a larger audience. These shops tend to order a lot of ocarinas from us!

Zelda Movie The Hero of Time Reviewed

A review of the independent Zelda film, The Hero of Time, has been posted at The Sacred Realm. The review is largely positive, saying that "BMB Finishes have succeeded very well in adapting Zelda for the big screen and condensing it into an approximately 1 hour 40 minute run-time," and "To bring a game like Zelda, with its numerous fantasy elements to the big screen and do it justice would require a Hollywood-scale budget. Considering the fact that this movie was made on a limited budget, paid for out of BMB's pockets, it's a fantastic production,". However, they did find some flaws with the film, adding that "the effects can be a bit rough, such as distinctly different lighting changes on different camera angles,".

Tsumuji a Zelda Ripoff?

Today at the Tokyo Game Show EA announced the upcoming title Tsumuji. Tsumuji is an action/adventure title designed to increase EA's popularity in Japan. Early reports say that the gameplay is exactly like that of The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass. The game also allows you to do things like pick up pots and toss them around, much like you can in the Zelda games.

Because the game is in the early stages, it's too soon to say if it's going to differentiate itself enough from the Zelda games. All we can do for now is wait and see.

Spirit Tracks Comes Out on December 7

Nintendo has announced that their upcoming Zelda game for the DS, Spirit Tracks, will come out on December 7. Spirit Tracks is the official sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and will feature the same touch-screen controls and 3D presentation as its predecessor.

Two New Zant Figures Available for Pre-Order

First4Figures has two new official licensed Zant figures available for pre-order on their website. The first figure, pictured above, stands a whopping 21 inches tall and retails at $349.99. He also includes an additional head.

The second Zant figure also stands at 21 inches tall and is $349.99. He comes outfitted in his helmet and armor, but the helmet is removable so that you can display him however you like.

First4Figures, has 4 new official licensed Zelda statues coming out. The statues will retail at $109 a piece and will be available for purchase by this holiday season. Pictured above are Zora Tunic Adult Link and Goron Tunic Adult Link. The other two statues will feature Ganondorf and Wolf Link & Midna.
